Bulgaria Birdwatching Tour
One of the greatest assets of Bulgaria is its intact nature with large
territories never managed by mankind. This tour is for birders who want
to spend less time traveling and more time exploring natural habitats
with high avian biodiversity. Visiting a whole series of top European
birdwatching spots in south Bulgaria is an unforgettable experience
for every true birder.
Day 1 After welcoming you at Sofia Airport we go on a journey
to Vitosha National Park. Before reaching the hotel there, we stop at
the foothills of the mountain to listen to the globally threatened Corncrake.
Overnight in a hotel in Vitosha Mountain.
Day 2 A walk in the vicinity of Aleko hut will guarantee mountain
specialties like Pallid Swifts, Black Woodpeckers, Black Redstarts,
Crag Martins, Dunnocks, Alpine Accentors, Water Pipits, Goldcrests,
Common Crossbills and many Nutcrackers. Overnight in a hotel in Vitosha
Mountain.
Day 3 After enjoying the mountain specialties of Vitosha National
Park we head for the Western Rhodopes. On our way to the Trigrad Gorge
we will explore the vicinity of Devin. Black Redstarts, Coal Tits, Cirl
and Rock Buntings are only a small part of the regions' avian richness.
Balkan Chamois are breeding in the area. Our birdwatching day will continue
with scanning the vertical rocks of the Trigrad Gorge. Here is the realm
of the elusive Wallcreeper. Overnight in a hotel in the town of Devin.
Day 4 After visiting the Devil's Throat Cave in the Gorge we
will be transported the Eastern Rhodopes. Stops in the Thracian Plain
will ensure species as Levant Sparrowhawk, Night Heron, Bee-eaters,
Serian Woodpecker, Rollers, Mask, Woodchat, Lesser Gray and Red-backed
Shrikes and many more. The next three days we will spend admiring the
cultural and natural heritage of the Eastern Rhodopes. Overnight in
Hotel in the village Madzarovo.
Day 5 In the morning our expedition continues with notable wetlands
around Bourgas. We will start with Atanasovsko Lake. Keep your eyes
open. Over 320 species have been recorded at the salt pans of this lake.
Collared Pratincoles, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Great Snipe, Great
Egrets, Spoonbills, Curlew Sandpipers, Penduline Tits, Black-headed
Buntings, Night and Squacco Herons are just a prelude to the uniqueness
of the reserve. Overnight in a hotel in the town of Bourgas.
Day 6 Mandra Lakes and Poda Lagoon near Bourgas are important
nesting places. Typical breeders are Great Cormorants, Night, Squacco
and Purple Herons, Little Egrets, Spoonbills, Glossy Ibises, White-tailed
Eagles, Yellow-legged Gulls, Little Terns and many water species. Situated
on Via Pontica flyway migrating or resting Pygmy Cormorants, White and
Dalmatian Pelicans, Whiskered Terns, Slender-billed and Mediterranean
Gulls are very likely to be registered. Overnight in a hotel in the
town of Bourgas.
Day 7 Return to Sofia. Overnight in a hotel in the Vitosha Mountain.
